“Spotify’s opaque algorithm rewards conformity to rigid metrics, including song length, and the prominence of chorus and hooks, and actively punishes any kind of experimentation … this method of recommendation is harmful because of the drag it will have on pop.” – John Doran of The Quietus

King Rocker, the Nightingales rockumentary I made with Michael Cumming, is now available to stream globally.
“One of my all-time favourite rock docs” MARK KERMODE, BBC
“It’s warm, it’s funny, it’s fascinating” Radcliffe and Maconie, BBC6 Music
“The film is ace, the band is ace, Rob is a remarkable man” Marc Riley, BBC6 Music
“A beautiful and fucking hilarious and moving film” Shaun Keavney, BBC6 Music
To celebrate 3 years since the acclaimed film King Rocker premiered on Sky Arts and Robin Ince noticed that “the whole country is watching King Rocker” we will be making the film available internationally on that exact same day. From February 6th everyone, anywhere, will be able to watch. Comedian Stewart Lee and director Michael Cumming (Brass Eye, Toast Of London) investigate a missing piece of punk history. Robert Lloyd, best known for fronting cult Birmingham band’s The Prefects and The Nightingales, has survived under the radar survived under the radar for over four decades. But how, if at all, does Robert want to be remembered? The anti-rockumentary ‘King Rocker’ weaves the story of Birmingham’s undervalued underdog autodidact into that of the city’s forgotten public sculpture of King Kong, eschewing the celebrity interview and archive-raid approach for a free-associating bricolage of Indian food, bewildered chefs, vegetable gardening, prescription medicines, pop stardom and pop art. Featuring Frank Skinner, Nigel Slater, Robin Askwith, Samira Ahmed, John Peel, Gina Birch, Marc Riley, Danny Fields, John Taylor, Paul Morley, Fuzzbox, Kevin Eldon, Nish Kumar, Bridget Christie, Andrew O’Neill, Sean Walsh, Paul Putner, Steve Beresford, and more. ‘King Rocker’ is now available to pre-order. From February 6th you can stream and download globally.

In the last few years we have lost a lot of people that were significant figures on the comedy scene when I started at the back end of the eighties, some known and many unknown, and it seems like I am at a funeral every few months now, where I see the same brave crowd putting on the same brave faces. But the loss of the comedian and musician Steve Brown, who died suddenly in February, has affected me significantly, I think because he was just someone who seemed like he would always be there, and someone who was always great at saying the right thing at the right time in a funny way.
On the Saturday night he texted me to say he wasn’t well and couldn’t come to my Bath show, the next day he was hospitalised, and it was all over in a few days. Steve’s last texts were about a vinyl copy of the second Comus album he had seen on a market stall which he was keen to give me, as he knew I would appreciate it, a strange little detail that will linger as Steve really knew his way around all different areas of music. He was a lovely man and a huge talent and will be massively missed. Your Mum will know him as Alan Partridge’s unflappable Glen Ponder but his fingerprints are all over the funniest music of the last four decades – the musical I Can’t Sing being an especial highlight – and he was also a respected, resourceful and innovative producer in the music industry proper, steering the raw talents of Rumer to stardom, for example.
Steve was also an early pioneer of the Mass Leaving Of Avalon Management Movement, that saw the company lose many of its top talents in the noughties. Steve’s tenacious and often hilarious questioning of apparent irregularities was an inspiration to a whole generation of escapees seeking better lives outside the agency, and lots of us had many great nights out laughing about the madness of the business side of comedy with Steve, who had become something of an expert on it. He could always find the funny in the most frustrating situations, a talent he shares with his gifted son the comedian Alfie Brown, while Lenny Brown, the bass player, got the musical genes.
Steve had a burning sense of right and wrong, and he and his wife Deborah hoped the Ukrainian family below could be secure in their future, and his family have set up the following Just Giving appeal for them in Steve’s memory. Please read and reflect.
https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/natalia-yunna-lisa
“Deborah and Steve met Natalia and Yunna in Bath, a chance meeting after they sought refugee status in the UK. They were living in dire accommodation due to their host family mistreating them. Steve and Deb invited them to live with them in their home after only knowing them for about one hour. They stayed until they decided to go to Germany to be with their other daughter who was studying there. That daughter is now in the UK studying at Bristol University and being sponsored under the Homes for Ukranians scheme with Deborah’s sister. Natalia and Yunna now wish to come back to the UK to be together as a family, and once again time is running out with their living accommodation due to sale of their studio flat and they are now on borrowed time. Steve’s dearest wish was to enable them to lead a better life than the one they are currently living and to that end we are finding accommodation for them in London, with Deb’s brother but ultimately want them to be a able to make independent decisions for themselves and their future, and money helps. With this fund they can pay a deposit on a flat, pay for transportation, get English language lessons, and Natalia (the mother) can update her qualifications of psychology and economics and ultimately, decide where and how to live. Steve’s dearest wish was that they could be safe and cared for.”

Alan Tomlinson (Jazz trombonist, dry northern wit, beatnik, 1947)
I review Alan Tomlinson in the forthcoming Idler. “The jazz trombonist Alan Tomlinson was born in 1947 and died in February this year. Three live releases, all from the mid-noughties, crept out on the Scatter Archive’s bandcamp in the month before his death. I worked with Tomlinson as the spoken word stooge in Steve Beresford’s and Tania Chen’s intermittent John Cage shows. Alan, a potential conservatoire virtuoso who chose instead to be a contrary subversive, combined an innate feel for the outermost possibilities of his instrument with the dry wit of the old school Northern working class autodidact outsider artist. A poker-faced clown persona made his impressively physical relationship with his trombone at once both balletic and burlesque. The solo set At The Red Rose, recorded in 2006 and 2007 at the irreplaceable and now demolished Finsbury Park jazz and comedy venue, is a great entry point. Normally po-faced Wire readers submit to titters of hilarity and gasps of amazement as Tomlinson simultaneously mocks, mutates, loves and liberates his loyal instrument, breathing life through it and into it, and making it live, like a mischievous goblin god. Baggage and Boating with Steve Beresford and Steve Noble, and At Ryan’s Bar with Rhodri Davies and Roger Turner are also newly available.”
